In our fast-paced, always-connected world, the idea of unplugging from our devices can be daunting. The constant stream of notifications, messages, and updates creates an almost addictive cycle of checking and rechecking our screens.
Recently, I had the opportunity to step away from it all for a weekend getaway. Although it wasn't intentional at first, as I accidentally forgot my phone, the experience turned out to be incredibly rewarding, thanks to a few simple comforts and the company of my significant other.
The Initial Anxiety
When I realised I had forgotten my phone, I felt a wave of anxiety. What if I missed an important call or an urgent email? What if something happened and I wasn’t reachable? These thoughts swirled in my mind, making the idea of a digital detox seem almost impossible. But, with encouragement from my other half, I decided to embrace the situation and make the most of it.

The Comfort of Candlelight
One of the key elements that helped me navigate this uneasy transition was my collection of candles. There’s something incredibly soothing about the soft, flickering glow of candlelight. It has a way of creating an atmosphere of calm and tranquillity.
Lighting my favourite candles each evening became a ritual, a signal to my mind and body that it was time to relax and let go of the day's stresses. The gentle scent of lavender and ylang-ylang filled the room, enhancing the soothing ambiance.
These familiar fragrances provided a sense of comfort and helped me to unwind, reminding me of the importance of simple pleasures and sensory experiences in maintaining well-being.
The Benefits of Digital Detox
As the weekend progressed, I began to notice several benefits of being unplugged:
1. Improved Mental Clarity:
Without the constant interruptions from notifications, I found my mind clearer and more focused. I could engage more deeply in conversations and activities, fully present in each moment.
2. Reduced Stress Levels:
The absence of digital demands significantly lowered my stress levels. I wasn’t worried about replying to emails or catching up on social media. Instead, I could fully relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
3. Enhanced Relationships:
Spending quality, uninterrupted time with my significant other strengthened our bond. We talked more, laughed more, and shared moments that would have been missed had we been glued to our screens.
4. Better Sleep:
Without the blue light from screens interfering with my sleep cycle, I enjoyed deeper and more restful sleep. The calming effect of candlelight in the evenings also helped set the stage for a good night's rest.
5. Increased Creativity and Productivity:
Freed from digital distractions, I found my creativity flowing. Ideas came more easily, and I felt a renewed sense of motivation and productivity.
Finding Balance
Returning to the digital world after the weekend, I felt a renewed sense of balance and perspective. While it’s not always feasible to completely unplug, incorporating regular digital detoxes into our routine can provide significant mental health benefits.
Whether it’s a few hours each day, a whole day each week, or an occasional weekend, making time to disconnect can help us reconnect with ourselves and those around us.
Conclusion
My unintentional weekend digital detox, though initially challenging, turned out to be a profoundly positive experience. The anxiety I felt at the beginning was replaced by a sense of peace and well-being, thanks in part to the comforting presence of my candles and the companionship of my significant other.
This experience underscored the importance of taking intentional breaks from our devices to nurture our mental and emotional health. In a world that often demands our constant attention, it’s essential to carve out moments of stillness and simplicity.
Whether through the gentle glow of candlelight, the company of loved ones, or simply the act of unplugging, we can find ways to restore balance and harmony in our lives. This are just hints and tips and hopefully you will find out what works for you.
